Self Storage Tip: Storing Appliances that Utilize Water – Part I: Refrigerators
Most used appliances store well IF you are willing to take a few added precautions in preparation for their storage.
As a rule, thoroughly cleaned appliances store better and require less attention than dirty ones AFTER they come out of your self storage unit.
Refrigerators should be completely emptied of food and perishables. Interior shelving and bins should be removed and then washed with a mild household detergent and left out to dry completely. This presents a great opportunity to wash the interior walls of the fridge as well. Leaving the doors open will allow the unit to dry completely, as well a let it assume room temperature more rapidly to help avoid unwanted condensation.
Water, even in small quantities, is an unwanted factor when storing in a sealed self storage unit. A climate controlled facility will be your best bet for warding off unwanted moisture, but the measures you take to remove water from your appliances can help guard against mildew and mold development. For this reason, be sure to drain ice maker water lines completely and remove inline filters. Your manufacturer’s instructions will be able to take you through these steps. Once things are completely dry, reassemble the interior components, and close the doors for transport purposes ONLY. On a side note, it’s a good idea to use a few pieces of duct or packaging tape (available at your Storage Masters office) to secure your refrigerator’s power cord and water lines to its outside back panel. This will keep them out of the way and help prevent either from being pinched or severed in transport.
Once your fridge is safely inside your self storage unit it is a good idea to prop the doors open just enough to ensure a little air circulation. This can help prevent the development of strange odors while in storage.

Self Storage Tip: Clean, Protect, Box and Store Your Books
So you’re taking care of some spring cleaning and you’ve decided that it’s time to tackle your over-loaded bookshelves. Your Storage Master’s climate controlled self storage unit is the perfect place to safely get them out of the way.
If you’re like most people, some of those volumes have collected dust over the months and years that they’ve been occupying space on your bookcase. You’ve determined that there are several volumes that you are just not ready to part with at your next garage sale or, on eBay, but you know you want them out of the way for now. Here are a few suggestions that will give your stored books optimal protection for several years:
- Select a modest size box (pH balanced cardboard -- pH 7 to 8.5 -- is best unless you line the box with an unscented trash can liner.) Remember, books in small quantities get heavy fast, and somebody’s got to move them eventually.
- Remove any dust or other soiling, by using a static duster - such as Swiffer, or even compressed air, blowing or stroking away from the spine.
- When placing books in the box, the natural tendency is to want to lay them flat, but it is actually best to stand them up in the box, just like you would in your bookcase. Avoid the temptation to fill voids in the top of the box with anything but other books, or acid free packing paper.
- Remember: the more snug the fit, the more stackable the box, and the more likely NOT to crush under the weight of other boxes that may be placed on top.
- Avoid storing directly on the floor, which is subject to cooling and some condensation during more humid seasons of the year, and creates possible risk of mold and/or mildew.
- Avoid storing book boxes in contact with an outside wall or ceiling, which can lead to unnecessary exposure to heat and can be detrimental to some compounds used in binding.
- Repel moisture and unwanted pests by lining your boxes with unscented trash can liners, as suggested earlier, and seal with a twister tie prior to closing the box. Make sure the books are moisture free before attempting this.
- If you suspect that you may need to access specific books in the not too distant future, it may be best to organize by category, but always best to label your boxes clearly.
Many of the supplies you will need are available at the Storage Masters office. We invite you to stop in and take a look.

Self Storage Shelving: Make The Most of Your Space
Trying to stay within your self storage budget? You could really use a little extra space, but that next size unit may be over-kill. At Storage Masters we have a custom made solution in store for you. In case you’ve not already noticed, our Chesterfield, MO Self Storage, O'Fallon, MO Self Storage, and St. Charles, MO Self Storage locations offer shelving that is built right into many of our self storage units.
Shelving can increase your available storage space by 15%, which may prevent you from the need to rent a larger unit. What’s more, shelving can also help you avoid the “crush factor” that comes along with stacking boxes from the floor up. Whereas this might be a suitable approach for the majority of your stored goods, there is nearly always a need for more delicate or fragile goods to get special treatment. Our built-in shelves will help you do just that.
If you plan well, using our shelves can save you a little strain too. More frequently accessed goods are often times better stored on shelves in order to help you avoid the virtual shell game of having to constantly off-load other stored items in order to get to the one you really need. On another note, storing heavier boxes near waist level will prevent you from having to stoop and lift as often.
