Storage Masters is a family owned 2nd generation business with five stores in three states, run by John B. Burrows and Michael Burrows. We are committed to providing friendly, personal and secure self-storage solutions at an affordable price.

John’s Legacy:

The company was founded by John R. Burrows. John began from humble beginnings.  He was the son of a taxi cab driver and a stay-at-home mother.  However, he excelled at school and business.  He paid for his bachelors and Masters degrees in engineering with weekend and nighttime jobs.  After school, he was involved in the Saturn SA-2 rocket and drilling rigs in California with Standard Oil.  Although he worked on interesting engineering projects, his true passion was for business.  He became a salesman for a ball bearings company and a stock broker for Dean Witter.  On the side, he chose to live in apartment complexes he could own and rent out and eventually made real estate his full time career.  John’s extensive experience in engineering, sales, marketing, real estate, contracting and advertising made John an ideal fit for the burgeoning self-storage industry.

In the 1980’s, self-storage was transitioning from a “mom and pop” industry to a professional one.  John wanted to be one the forefront of that trend.  In 1984, John decided to develop an unused plot of land adjacent to an apartment complex he owned to be the first location built by Storage Masters.  The property, located at 8881 East Florida Avenue, then on the outskirts of Denver, now serves a highly dense area of residential homes and surrounding businesses.  Picking the right location was key to the start of the company and Denver was the right place to start.  Denver’s population was estimated to be 663,862 in 2014, the 21st-most populous city in the U.S.

After the success of the Denver location, John looked for the next place to expand his business.  Having been born and raised in St. Louis, John decided return to his family roots and to expand his storage business at the same time.

In 1986, John developed the St. Charles property.  The property, located at 1025 Hemsath Road, then only situated along Highway 94 has witnessed the expansion of the Page Avenue Extension Highway 364.  This has expansion has now allowed Storage Masters to better serves the St. Charles County community.   St. Charles County is now one of the fastest growing counties in the country and is home to over 360,000 people.

The success kept coming and John kept looking for a diamond in the rough property. He found such a property in the Chesterfield Valley on 16824 Chesterfield Airport Road. At the time the Chesterfield Valley area was underdeveloped and the opportunity for growth was immense. Chesterfield Storage Masters location was then developed in 1987. Chesterfield Valley remained underdeveloped until the late 90’s. Today Chesterfield Valley is home to over 2,000 businesses and construction of many more projects are still underway.  Chesterfield is a second-ring western suburb of St. Louis and is the largest city in west St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. As of the 2010 census the population is 47,484 which is the 14th largest city in Missouri.

With the success of the 2 Missouri properties, John wanted to expand and Missouri was still his focus for growth. In 1999 he found what he thought was the ideal property for a self-storage and corporate office at 2601 East Terra Lane in O’Fallon at the intersection of Highway 70 and Highway 79. The high visibility from the highways and the mix of business and residential in the area made this property a find. The City of O’Fallon’s accomplishments made the decision an easy one. O’Fallon was voted one of the “Best Places to Live” (Money magazine, 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2012) and one of America’s safest cities (CQ Press, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011/2012.)  In 2010-2012, O’Fallon was rated the 2nd safest city in the nation.

John kept a continuous eye on other emerging markets for his next storage facility and in 2005 his perseverance paid off. This time it was a storage facility already in business and operating in Plano Texas at 4633 Hedgcoxe Road. The facility was built in 2003 and in pristine condition and a very attractive facility. This new addition to the Storage Masters would family would fit in nicely and Plano was a city poised for growth. Plano, Texas, is the largest city in Collin County with a population of more than 270,000. Located just 20 miles north of Dallas, Plano offers a dynamic community with excellent nationally recognized schools, 4,000 acres of parks, excellence in public safety, vibrant arts scene, historic downtown, entertainment districts, diverse cultural offerings, popular retail and thriving economy
